One small step for our country, one giant leap for Filipinos. Sadly, maraming electronic institute diyan satin na managed by backward mentality people na hindi na nag-improve ang academics katulad ng pinanggalingan ko. Counter-development in terms of technology and knowledge kung baga. Teaching outdated basics and fundamentals to students. Maraming graduates o tapos ng two years Electronic of Computer Technician course na hindi alam kung pano mag-program ng microcontroller o embedded programming (all satellites have that even micro). Mostly cannot even design a simple low power amplifier and understand datasheets. Walang institute o university satin na nagtuturo ng rocket propulsion kaya sa Bocaue, Bulacan na lang nagte-training. Unfortunately kahit sa Bocaue hindi nila alam ang Hydrazine at Ion Thruster while in Japan one graduate student developed and used for Hayabusa Project. I was just fortunate I worked in one of the leading international aerospace company (Rockwell Collins) for ten years and now working in military air defense system maintaining similar to Patriot Air Defense System. Bakit ang DOST at DepEd are doing nothing for small technological institute at electronic schools katulad ng pinagtapusan ko para naman madevelop ang curriculum?

As of today, January 13, Diwata-1 has circled the world approximately 4,083 times, taking images not just of the Philippines but also of other parts of the Earth. Diwata-1, our country’s first microsatellite, started this mission in April 27 of this year when it was deployed successfully from the International Space Station (ISS). Since that day, we at the PHL-Microsat Program have been excited by what this represents for the future of our country in space exploration.

You can share in this excitement by following this three-part series on the prediction of satellite tracks. This is basically an inside look into one task in the satellite operations behind Diwata-1 — the tracking and propagating of the microsatellite’s orbit. By doing this, we would know when Diwata-1 will pass over the country, where it will pass, and for how long. After this introduction, I will be discussing some basic information, from the organization tasked to monitor satellites launched in space to the catalogs and models created to predict satellite orbits. Then, I will be discussing different ways of applying these catalogs and models in predicting and tracking Diwata-1’s path.

Programming knowledge is not needed for the most part but I recommend that you guys start exploring and learning this stuff because it is very useful and it’s also fun! Either way, by the end of this series, you would know enough to build your own Diwata-1 tracker. Sounds cool, right?!

So welcome and I am looking forward to you guys joining me in watching Diwata-1 make its journey through the skies.
